Last night I made a long and arduous trek out to Arlington in search of stain and glory. On the train out there I had to sit near a truly awful girl. I have never heard anyone say "like" quite so many times. "I like really like loved these shoes... like they were so like um pointy" "oh my God like really pointy" I almost asked her to like be quiet after her likes starting getting their own likes "Like I was so like ready to leave when that guy didn't come over to talk to me."
But after enduring a long trainride of this, I began to think of how like could ruin various important moments in history. Here are some examples:
"One small step for man, like one giant leap for mankind"
"The only thing we have to fear is like fear itself"
"We shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight like in the hills; we shall never surrender"
"Would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but like they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!"
"And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask like what you can do for your country. "
"To be or not to be, that is like the question"
I challenge anyone to find me a really noteworthy quote that uses "like" to make the statement more powerful (Note: This challenge does not include quotes where like is used as a proper simile).
In conclusion that girl on the train is like totally dumb and I'm sure the esteemed S. Q. Hagglepuss also feels like a really strong disconnect with her.
