Calvinball

I just read this fairly long excoriation of the MSM by Hunter over at DailyKos, and the thing that stuck out to me the most was the phrase "military Calvinball." I really can't think of a better term for what this administration has been doing for the last few years.

They went into this war with a set of rules, but under those rules they couldn't really ever win, so they simply changed them. Then they realized that their opponent didn't know the new rules and they changed them again. So it has gone, step by step, until we're at a point where no one is really sure why we're even playing anymore and the score is something along the lines of 3200 to Z. We all know Calvinball is a great game, but couldn't we maybe come up with a better military policy than "make it up as you go along"?

To add, Hunter deserves a lot of credit for this term, and seeing as how I plan to use it often in the future I want to thank him once again right now. Go read the whole post, if only to assure yourself that as a blog reader or writer you are part of the future.
