A Gerund Paints a Thousand Words

Last month president Bush was interviewed about our current situation in Iraq. The President stated in response that we are neither winning, nor are we losing. In a press secretary meeting on December 18, Tony snow had this to say about the President’s accounts on the war:
I'm just -- I'm not playing the game anymore. It's one of these things where you
end up -- it all ends up trying to -- you're trying to summarize a complex
situation with a single word or gerund…

So, I guess the situation in Iraq can’t be described by a single gerund (whatever that’s supposed to mean), fair enough. However, Mr. Snow, if I may ask about our current situation in Iraq using a gerund, for example what are we doing, or perhaps our future, like when are we leaving, I would be more than happy to accept an ungerunated answer.
