Men Suffering From Depression

The cover article of Newsweek this past week is about men suffering from depression. One lesser known statistic is that in the past fifty years or so men have committed suicide at approximately four or five times the rate of women. Even worse, following a divorce, nine out of the ten people that kill themselves are men. It's unfortunate that we live in a society where men feel the need to bottle up their emotions. I also believe that many women view Depression as a weakness in a man, instead of how they would feel if the man suffered from prostate cancer or kidney stones. The best part of the article, for me anyways, was the final sentence. "Taking care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally - maybe that's the real definition of what it means to be a man." If you've been depressed, it's your responsibility to find the help you need.
