It's In The Details
I watched the Tom Hanks classic "Big" tonight, and at one point he and his friend use silly string to imitate vomit and snot in a hilarious, immature and carefree manner. I then turned to my friend, almost without thinking, and said, "Did you know they use silly string in Iraq to check for wires of booby traps?" and my friend looked at me like I was a little crazy. I'm not crazy, and it got me to thinking about just how many small parts of life have been irreversibly altered by this war. It's not always a bad thing - I think using silly string in combat is ingenious - but the fact that silly string makes me think of war does reinforce the idea that the situation in Iraq is a lot bigger than we can really comprehend at present.
