John McCain, Supporting the Troops

...by lying. For those who don't know, John McCain made somewhat of a fool of himself yesterday by attempting to prove that the surge is working by going for a walk in a Baghdad market wearing a bullet proof vest and being protected by a security detail that included over 100 soldiers, a few (5) helicopters, and multiple humvees.

This has been dealt with in detail all over the place, including here, here, and here, and all I want to say is this - if the surge is working, find some proof, but if it's not don't just lie to our faces. This time the lie was blatant enough that the media called him on it, but it's still insulting that McCain has the audacity to attempt to mislead us about the situation over there. Not to mention, (something I haven't read anywhere else) you don't support the troops by trying to portray the situation they face as less dangerous than it actually is. It requires a lot of commitment and bravery to walk around with a target on your back, and McCain's attempt to spin the surge ends up belittling that bravery. It's got to piss off guys who get shot at every day to hear a Senator say they're in a safe place.
