C'mon Iran, you used to be cool

Is anyone else as confused about this situation as I am. I sincerely don’t understand why Iran is still detaining the 15 sailors captured on March 23rd. For anyone who has not heard, Iran captured a British patrol boat, which they claim had allegedly moved into Iranian water while patrolling the Iraqi coast. Obviously the Brits claim otherwise. However, even if the boat had moved into Iranian water, military ships have sovereign association; Iran is compelled to request the ship take leave before making any moves to detain the crew.

I’ve been keeping up with the articles on CNN and it honestly seems to me like they are doing this for attention; God knows why they’d want this kind of attention. I don’t know if I’m the only one who feels this way, but most of this doesn’t make sense. The most recent article states Iran’s claim that the patrol boat had entered Iranian waters six times before they were detained. However this statement was recently released. I see no good reason to withhold evidence like this rather than releasing it immediately after the capture of the patrol boat six days ago. Last Saturday the Iranians released a set of coordinates showing where the boat was captured. These coordinates fell within Iraqi waters, however on Sunday, Iran released a ‘revised’ set of coordinates placing the boat in Iranian waters. Finally, one of the soldiers was seen on an Iranian television station, offering a statement of apology for entering Iranian waters. It’s impossible to ascertain the legitimacy of this statement, which could have been coerced.

Regardless of these inconsistencies, the soldiers appear to be well. However, the British government has yet to be granted access to them. The soldier who appeared on television earlier in the week was to be released, however her release was denied, due to the six unauthorized entries the British made before their capture. All I’m saying is this really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. I understand the concern of protecting your territory from foreign ships, but to detain military members of a sovereign state for the duration of time and in the manner that Iran has done is out of line.

And what's this guy's deal?
